How Just a Few Minutes a Day Can Build Your Child’s Language Skills for Life by Jo Ann Gramlich, MS, CCC-SLP

Did you know that just a few minutes of intentional interaction each day can shape your child’s communication for years to come?

In a world filled with distractions and busy schedules, it’s easy to feel like you don’t have enough time. But the truth is, you don’t need hours. You just need moments.

At Talk, Play, and Read, we believe that language development doesn’t require perfection or planning. It begins with one moment, one conversation, one connection at a time.

This is the heart behind The Behind Cycle, a mission-driven initiative I created to help stop the pattern of children falling behind in language and literacy.

By starting early and keeping it simple, we can change that.

Here’s how:

• Talk: Narrate your day. Describe what you see, feel, and do. Let your child hear rich, expressive language even if they aren’t speaking yet.

• Play: Use playtime to encourage back-and-forth communication. Take turns, follow their lead, and add words to their actions.

• Read: Just one book a day can make a difference. Point to pictures, ask questions, and let your child turn the pages. It’s not about finishing the story, it’s about sharing it.

Every child deserves the chance to thrive. The Behind Cycle exists to empower families with the tools and knowledge to make that happen, starting from birth.

So if you’re wondering where to begin, the answer is simple: right here, right now. One moment at a time. One child at a time. And yes, it starts with you.
