Safety is a FELT sense

Your body is always listening.

Before your conscious mind has decided what something means, your sensation system is already gathering evidence.

A sound.
A face.
A smell.
A temperature.
A tone of voice.
A headline.
A hand on your shoulder.
A car backfiring.

And underneath all of it, your body is asking: AM I SAFE?

Am I safe?

I have started thinking less about the nervous system and more about our sensation system — because we are sensation machines.

We ingest information through our eyes, ears, skin, gut, muscles, heart, lungs, memories and relationships. Our brains continually receive, filter and interpret this enormous stream of information.

And today, that stream has become a flood.

Safety is a felt sense.

And perhaps our work as adults is to become intimate enough with our own sensation system that we can recognize that feeling when it arrives.

And eventually ask an even bigger question:

Can I become a safe place for myself?

PS..hiking on that trail depicted above — I was happy and joyful UNTIL I noticed fear of losing my way on that trail, and then an unsafe sensation was felt and then I had to use my brain, my discernment to speak lovingly to myself to get back to safety… In an instant, we can toggle from safe to unsafe to safe again…It takes practice!! But living in safety is worth the practice.
