But he did me a huge favor.
Many, many, many years ago, I was paddling around the shallow end of the pool at summer camp. I must have been doing something right, because the instructor told me it was time to move to the deep end.
I refused.
If “refused” means yelling, “NO! I’m not ready!”
He picked me up by the waist (I told you this was many, many years ago), carried me to the deep end, tossed me in, held out a bamboo pole, and said:
“Now swim to the pole.”
I did.
I survived.
And I never avoided the deep end again.
Today, that instructor might be fired — or worse. But what he really did was smash through my fear and show me I was capable of more than I believed.
That lesson never left me.
