Ever wonder what makes some businesses really stand out while others struggle? Two words – Emotional intelligence. It’s all about empathy – understanding and caring about how others feel. It is about doing business heart-to-heart.

Too many coaches and consultants are using shady tactics to attract new clients in this overly saturated environment. They use things like the old “bait and switch” and other sleazy strategies to suck you in and then they don’t even give you what you thought you were paying for.

It’s a bit scary, but it’s the way the world these days. The thing is, for those of us who prefer to run our businesses with a bit more integrity, they are actually making us look good! People are tired of being conned by false claims that suck them in. They would prefer to do business with people who have integrity and really care about their needs.

What’s Emotional Intelligence Anyway?

Emotional intelligence (EI) is the ability to understand your own emotions and the emotions of others. When you have high Emotional Intelligence, you:

  1. Always know how you’re feeling (self-awareness)
  2. Control your emotions (self-management)
  3. Understand how others feel (social awareness)
  4. Build great relationships (relationship management)

Why Does Emotional Intelligence Matter in Business?

Understanding Emotional Intelligence can take your business to a whole new level. Let’s break it down:

  • Your clients stay with you: When you really get how your clients feel, they’ll trust you more. They’ll want to keep working with you and sign up for additional programs.
  • Word-of-Mouth magic: Happy clients talk! If you make your clients feel understood, they’re more likely to tell their friends about you. That means more business without spending on ads. (Yay!)
  • You come up with great ideas: When you’re in tune with your own feelings and your clients, you naturally come up with better ideas for how to help them. This could mean new programs or new ways of coaching that better suit your client’s needs.
  • You’ll handle the tough stuff better: EI helps you stay cool when things get tricky. Maybe a client is upset, or a coaching session isn’t going well. With EI, you can turn things around smoothly. Or maybe you’re having a bad day. When you are in tune with your EI, you know exactly how to handle a not-so-good day and not let it derail you.
  • You’ll be a stronger coach: Coaches with high EI inspire their clients more. People want to learn from someone who really gets them and can guide them emotionally.
  • Less stress for you: When you understand emotions better, you don’t get stressed about your work. You know how to handle your feelings and your clients’ feelings too.
  • You build deeper connections: With high EI, you connect better with each client. You pick up on what they’re not saying and help them in ways they might not even know they need.
  • You easily roll with the changes: As a coach or consultant, things change a lot. Clients come and go, trends shift. With EI, you’ll handle these changes like a pro, keeping yourself and your clients positive.

How to Boost Your Emotional Intelligence

Ready to level up your Emotional Intelligence? Try these simple tips:

  1. Listen, Really Listen: When someone’s talking, focus on understanding them, not just waiting for your turn to speak. I learned a really cool acronym from a colleague recently – W.A.I.T. – Why Am I Talking? Remember, it is about them, not you.
  2. Put Yourself in Their Shoes: Try to imagine how others might feel in different situations.
  3. Create a Safe Space: Make sure clients feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and feelings without fear. When your clients feel safe with you, you will be able to help them better than before.
  4. Practice Empathy: Work to understand the feelings of others. Emotions matter. Pay attention and choose to listen empathetically.

Emotional Intelligence in Action – An Example

Imagine you’re a health coach. A client comes to you feeling discouraged because they’ve gained back some weight they’d lost. With good EI, you’ll:

  • Listen carefully to their feelings without judging
  • Show you understand their frustration
  • Help them see their progress, not just the setback
  • Work together to adjust their plan in a way that feels doable
  • Check in with them more often to offer support and encouragement

EI helps your client feel understood and motivated, not ashamed. It shows them that slip-ups are normal and fixable. You’re not just helping with their diet – you’re boosting their confidence and teaching them how to bounce back from challenges.

In the world of business, having a big heart can be just as important as having a big brain
